Irritated observation of the evening, following on a bout with a less-than-successful novel

It is possible to overuse "he breathes" as a substitute for "he says."  Especially since the character seems to be "breathing" when he might as well be "snarling," or even "yelling."  Are we to assume that he's suffering from laryngitis?
