This Week's Acquisitions

  • Emily Sarah Holt, All for the Best/At ye Grene Griffin (John F. Shaw, n.d.).  Double-decker with two of Holt's novels for children.  The former features Bernard Gilpin and is set during Mary I's reign; the latter stars Anne Neville and Richard III.  (You can find a brief, scathing account of At ye Grene Griffin at the Richard III Society.) 
  • Margaret Drabble, The Needle's Eye (Harvest Books, 2004).  Love, law, and custody suits.
  • Kate Grenville, Lilian's Story (Harvest Books, 1994).  Seriously unpleasant girlhood in early 20th-c.  Australia.
  • Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, Madeline is Sleeping (Harvest Books, 2005).  A girl sleeps and...dreams?
  • Mary McCarthy, The Group (Harvest Books, 1991).  Reprint of McCarthy's classic satirical novel.
  • Liam O'Flaherty, The Informer (Harvest Books, 1980).  Famed novel of the Irish Civil War.
  • "Archdeacon Chasuble" [pseud. Arthur Featherstone Marshall], The Comedy of Convocation in the English Church (Catholic Publication Society, 1868).  US reprint of a English Catholic convert's satirical attack on the CofE, inspired by the first Pan-Anglican Council (1867).  You can see an American review (speculating that Newman was the author) here; there's a brief account of the author appended to his brother's lengthier entry at the Catholic Encyclopedia.
