  • Johann Lorenz Mosheim, Institutes of Ecclesiastical History..., trans. James Murdock, 3 vols. (Harper & Brothers, 1842). A German history, written in Latin and originally published in the mid-18th c.; remained a standard source (mostly for Protestants...) throughout the 19th c.

  • China Mieville, The Scar (Del Rey, 2002). Woman flees bad situation, winds up in worse one.

  • Eileen Cleere, Avuncularism: Capitalism, Patriarchy, and Nineteenth-Century English Culture (Stanford, 2004). The role of the uncle in representations of 19th-c. families. I'm reviewing this one for Choice.

  • A. G. Dickens and John Tonkin, The Reformation of Historical Thought (iUniverse, 1999). Reprint of Dickens' historiographical survey, covering the sixteenth century to the present.
