This Week's Acquisitions

  • Thomas Flanagan, A history of the church in England, from the earliest period, to the re-establishment of the hierarchy in 1850, 2 vols. (Charles Dolman, 1857).  A Catholic history.  There's a brief overview of Flanagan's life at the New Advent encyclopedia
  • Thomas Powell, An Essay on Apostolical Succession, Being a Defence of a Genuine Protestant Ministry, Against the Exclusive and Intolerant Schemes of Papists and High Churchmen; and Supplying a General Antidote to Popery...(Thomas Ward and Co., [1840]).  Methodist critique, apparently prompted by the Oxford Movement.
  • The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments... (SPCK, 1851).  Victorian printing of the BoCP, given as a prize book in 1853 (complete with some rather funny period bookmarks, including a feather, a ribbon, and a hymn taken from some tract).
  • Kathryn Davis, The Thin Place: A Novel (Little, Brown, & Co., 2006).  Odd and apparently supernatual goings-on in a small town.
