- The Rev. Richard Cobbold, Freston Tower: A Tale of the Times of Cardinal Wolsey (Ward, Lock, & Co., n.d.). A didactic historical novel about Cardinal Wolsey and the Reformers, first published in 1850. Cobbold's most famous novel was The History of Margaret Catchpole (1847), about which more here. You can find information about the real Freston Tower, Cobbold, and his novel at Freston.net. The village of Wortham, where Cobbold was Rector, has developed a musical about him.
- Penelope Lively, The Photograph (Penguin, 2004). A man seeks the truth behind a discomfiting photograph of his late wife.
- Philip K. Dick, The Man in the High Castle (Vintage, 1992). Famous alternate history, in which the Axis wins WWII.
- Chris Brooks, Gothic Revival (Phaidon, 1999). Cultural study of the Victorian movement, covering art, architecture, and literature.
- Michael S. Molasky, The American Occupation of Japan and Okinawa: Literature and Memory (Routledge, 2001). Examines Japanese responses to the presence of the US military.
