This Week's Acquisitions
(We have an art & biography theme this week, it seems.)
- Stanley Weintraub, Edward the Caresser: The Playboy Prince Who Became Edward VII (Free Press, 2001). Subtitle says it all, eh? Biography of "Bertie," the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, covering only his life as the Prince of Wales.
- Virginia Dodier, Lady Hawarden: Clementina, Lady Hawarden: Studies from Life, 1857-1864 (Aperture, 1999). Examines portraits and landscapes by a pioneering Victorian photographer; see an example of her work here.
- Timothy Mowl, William Beckford: Composing for Mozart (John Murray, 1998). Biography of the famous eccentric who wrote Vathek and built Fonthill Abbey. There's a 3D recreation of Fonthill here; more images at the Beckford Project.
- Nancy Weston, Daniel Maclise: Irish Artist in Victorian London (Four Courts, 2001). Biographical study of the popular painter; more on Maclise here, with links.
