This Week's Acquisitions

  • M.A.F., Deliverance, A Tale of the Inquisition, and  Other Stories (Groombridge, n.d.).  I was initially rather baffled by this thing, since on examination it sure as heck looked like a periodical running a serial novel.  A quick trip to the British Library's website revealed that, in fact, that's exactly what this is: it's the second volume of English Homes; Or, Our Own "Saxon" Periodical.  A Suggestive Family Journal, which appeared in 1869.  There's a quick mention of this ultra-short-lived periodical here.  (eBay)
  • John Franceschina, ed., Sisters of Gore: Seven Gothic Melodramas by British Women, 1790-1843 (Routledge, 2000).  Before Supernatural and Medium, there was Gothic melodrama.  The best-known authors in the collection (actually, probably the only known authors in this collection) are Harriet Lee and Catherine Gore.  (Amazon [secondhand])
  • Carol Birch, Scapegallows (Virago, 2009).  Historical novel about Margaret Catchpole.  (eBay)
  • P. F. Kluge, Gone Tomorrow (Overlook, 2009). English professor researches the life of a deceased colleague, a creative writer who never followed up on his first great success.  (Lift Bridge)
