  • Christoph Ransmayr, The Last World, trans. John E. Woods (Grove Weidenfeld, 1990).  Young man attempts to track down Ovid...only not quite in Ovid's time.   
  • Richard Powers, Operation Wandering Soul (Morrow, 1993).  In a hospital, two doctors try to keep desperately ill children alive. 
  • Max Apple, The Propheteers (Harper Perennial, 1987).  Satirical clash of the corporate titans.
  • John Hersey, The Child Buyer: A Novel in the Form of Hearings before the Standing Committee on Education, Welfare, & Public Morality of a certain State Senate, Investigating the conspiracy of Mr. Wissey Jones, with others, to Purchase a Male Child (Borzoi, 1960).  Why does Mr. Jones want to buy this particular child? For what nefarious(?) purpose?
  • Stanley Elkin, The Magic Kingdom (Plume, 1986).  Several ailing children are going to Disneyland.
  • Patrick Parrinder, Authors and Authority: English and American Criticism 1750-1990 (Columbia, 1991).  Revised version of Parrinder's history of literary criticism.
