This Week's (Belated) Acquisitions
(Got a bit distracted by course prep.)
- Agnes M. Stewart, The Last Abbot of Thornton; Or, Lord Wake of Baynard Castle (Burns & Oates, 1887). Catholic historical novel that tries to rescue the reputation of Katherine Howard (a.k.a. Henry VIII's wife #5). (eBay)
- Alistair MacLeod, Island: The Complete Stories (Norton, 2001). Collection of stories by this leading Canadian author. (freebie)
- Hina Nazar, Enlightened Sentiments: Judgment and Autonomy in the Age of Sensibility (Fordham, 2012). Argues that we need to renew our attention to the role of reason in sentimental discourse, using works by Hume, Godwin, Austen, and Rousseau, among others. I'm reviewing this for Choice. (Review copy)
- Joseph S. Dempster, From Romanism to Pentacost, or the Spiritual Autobiography of Joseph M. Dempster, the Converted Roman Catholic Evangelist (God's Revivalist Office, 1898). One of the many nineteenth-century entries in the "Roman Catholic converts to Protestant Denomination X" genre (although, unusually for this genre, has some complaints about Protestant theological ignorance). (eBay)
