Unjustified
As I've continued sorting through my sermon notes, I've been on the lookout for any differences in emphasis from the vast quantities of contemporary anti-Catholic fiction and polemic. So far, the most glaring difference has to do with justification by faith alone (sola fide)--or, rather, the virtual absence of discussions of same. If you spend any amount of time with Victorian controversial literature, fictional or otherwise, you can't help but drown in debates over justification; the sermons, by contrast, spend a lot of time on sola scriptura (and the importance of Bible-reading more generally), and a considerable amount of time on private judgment and solus Christus, but almost no time on justification. I'm not sure that I want to draw any general conclusions about this, since it could simply be an accident of my sample. It's odd, however. The next step is to spend some time with sermons on justification.
