CVs: a quick suggestion to job applicants

Bearing in mind that your average search committee member faces vast snowdrifts of job applications, might I suggest the following?

Please separate your publications and conference presentations, like so:

  • Books published and in press
  • Articles published and in press
  • [Encyclopedia entries published and in press--or class them with the articles]
  • Work in circulation
  • Work in process (if desired)
  • Reviews
  • Conference presentations

If you have academic websites or other online publications (outside of peer-reviewed articles, that is), list them wherever seems appropriate, given your strengths or weaknesses in other areas.

It also helps if you date things consistently--either old to new or vice-versa.
