The Pre-Semester Book Blues
1. Reasons to distrust your campus bookstore's auto-fill, #222111: I went in to check on my books today, and discovered that The Hound of the Baskervilles was indeed there. The "retold" Hound of the Baskervilles. The one intended for YA readers. The one I certainly didn't want my seminar to read. I expressed much sadness in the appropriate direction.
2. My inability to get a desk copy of the fifth edition of the Longman British Lit anthology is apparently matched by Pearson's inability to ship same to my undergraduates. Or its limited ability, as I saw one fifth edition, sitting sad and miserable in the midst of a sea of fourth editions.
3. I continue not to have a desk copy of Charles Marowitz's Sherlock's Last Case. There may be a nefarious plot at work, although I hope it isn't the one that Watson cooks up in this play.
